Newport Senior Center news

By Brenda Burns, Executive Director, Sullivan County Nutrition Services

Things at the Newport Senior Center do not appear to be winding down any time too soon. Next week is busy with a few new activities to go along with all of our regularly scheduled activities. Crafts with Lois have been a big hit. Everyone has really gotten involved and next Wednesday proves to be no different.
Lois will be teaching a class on how to create a pine cone Christmas ball; the holidays will be here before we know it. The class begins at 10 a.m. At the time of this writing, there are only five seats remaining before this class size of 20 is completely filled. All participants are asked to bring a pair of scissors. The cost of this class is $3.
We are proud to announce another great new service for our members. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, John Cancellieri, from Sound Advice Hearing Center, will be at the center from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. to meet individuals and offer free hearing aid cleaning. John is very knowledgeable in this field and can answer your questions regarding hearing devices and the up-to-date devices now available. If there is an interest, John has agreed to visit the center on a regular basis to continue with hearing device cleanings and to offer free hearing tests. Even if you do not need a cleaning, stop by just to say hi.
Do you live on a fixed income and look for ways to stretch your pennies? Have you heard of programs that assist individuals and wondered if you would qualify for the program? Could you benefit from a few extra dollars in your pocket? If you said yes to any of these questions, we may be able to help.
SCNS Newport Outreach office will be holding a Benefits Check-Up Day on Thursday, Sept. 15, beginning at 9 a.m. Anyone interested in learning what he/she may be eligible to receive for assistance, should schedule a half-hour appointment by calling (603) 863-6770. Each person will need to know his/her gross monthly income and current med list. This is another free service but you must schedule an appointment in advance.
The next new and exciting event at the center is a “Wicked Kick’N Country Hoedown” dance on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. Country favorites like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones and many others will be heard as JJ’s Music entertains us. The cost is $5 per person. Snacks will be provided at no charge. Water and soda will be available for $1 each. Spirits will be the responsibility of the individual guest. The center is air-conditioned for those of you who want to kick it up a little. If dancing is not your thing, just come and listen to your favorite songs of yesteryear and socialize with friends.
Another great activity enjoyed by many is the trip programs. Beginning Jan. 1, 2017, all trips will be an additional $5 for all non-members traveling with us.
