Hair stylist opens shop on Washington Street
“I like to design and do their hair to their structure and their features,” Boyd said while standing in his new salon on Washington Street in Claremont last Friday.
He said some customers come in with very strict and specific requests, while others rely on Boyd’s expertise. Either way, Boyd said he likes to be open about what designs will and won’t work with a person’s facial structure and hair thickness.
“Most like to get what their girlfriend or boyfriend wants,” Boyd joked.
T n’ J Hair Designs opened Feb. 9 in the space behind Northern Lights Tanning Salon at 198 Washington St. Boyd said having the tanning salon in the same building complements his business well, with a lot of customers utilizing both.
“People like to do one-stop shopping,” he said.
The salon features two stations on the lower level and space for massage work on the second floor. Boyd said the salon was “turn key,” with all of the necessary equipment already in place, including seating, salon seats, a kitchenette, mirrors and head washing stations.
“I didn’t have to bring anything,” Boyd said. “When I first came in here I said, ‘I’ll take it.’”
The property is owned by Heidi and Jeff North, who have two more spaces available in the building. Boyd currently offers hair cuts, coloring and highlighting, straightening and washing among other services.
Although he is currently running the salon by himself, he is hoping to bring on another employee, and hopes to eventually offer massage on the upper level.
A licensed cosmetologist, Boyd studied cosmetology at Sherwood School of Beauty, and has worked in and managed salons of various sizes in Connecticut and New Hampshire over the years, including salons he owned in Hillsboro and Keene. Between larger 25-person salons and the smaller operations, Boyd said he likes the “peaceful flow” of working in a smaller salon.
“Through the years I’ve been in a lot of places,” Boyd said. “I’ve been across the region.”
Boyd operated a salon in Keene for a number of years until his son wanted to go to school in Connecticut, at which point he purchased a salon in that state. He said he had wanted to return to New Hampshire for some time, and is currently living in Claremont with his brother.
“I like the people” in New Hampshire, he said.
Boyd said some of his customers from Connecticut expressed interest in traveling to Claremont to visit and get their haircut, and that they would miss him.
“They’re still in tears,” he said.
The salon is open Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Walk-ins and appointments are welcome.
