Post 37 splits with Lakes Region

CASTLETON, Vt. — Bellows Falls Post 37 let one get away in an American Legion double header Saturday, but would rebound to take the second game and earn a split.

Lakes Region 5, Bellows Falls 4

Three walks and a single tallied up to a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as host Lakes Region rallied from a 4-0 deficit.

With Lakes trailing 4-2, Aaron Szabo and Joe Brown drew walks to start the bottom of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Sam Eaton, a walk to Kyle Smith and a single from Jeremy Johnson led to three runs and a 5-4 edge.

Josh Woods would single and steal second for BF to open the sixth, but Brown retired the next six batters to end the game.

Post 37 began the day's scoring with a two-out double by Alex Groenewold and RBI single from Brady Illingworth in the first.

In the second,Woods reached on a one-out error, them Liam Hackett and Jacob Streeter drew two-out walks to load the bases. Joe Corey plated two runs with a base hit and Streeter made it 4-0 on a passed ball.

Lakes Region got a run back in the third when Szabo reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Brown's single. Lakes made it 4-3 in the fourth when Johnson tripled and scored on an error off the bat of Carl Ruby.

Woods and Illingworth had two hits apiece to lead BF at the plate.

Down 1-0, Post 37 put together a three-run fourth inning to take the lead and salvage the split. Kendal Heath did the majority of the damage with a three-run home run, plating Corey and Illingworth, who had a single and walk, respectively.

Lakes would close the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning, but BF added an insurance run in the sixth when Groenewold tripled and scored on a Woods single.

Lakes Region grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on singles by Morse and Brown, then added its second run in the fourth on a Welch single, a walk and a pair of ground outs.

Heath struck out five and scattered five hits for a complete game win.

Corey had two of Bellows Falls' six hits and finished the day with three. Woods had three hits on the day as well while Groenewold and Illingworth had two apiece.

Post 37 (13-7) closes out the regular season Wednesday hosting Ludlow (Post 36) at 7 p.m. Several Ludlow players were on the Green Mountain and Springfield high school teams this spring.

The state tournament begins Saturday, hosted by Hartford.
