Newport Senior Center news

By Brenda Burns, Executive Director, Sullivan County Nutrition Services

Mark your calendars! The Newport Senior Center will be holding its first ever Vintage Auction & More with Smith Auction Gallery on Sept. 9. Proceeds will benefit our $650,000 reconstruction project soon to be underway.

Registration and preview will begin at 8 a.m. The auction will start at 10 a.m. We will need volunteers to help for the day. If you would like to volunteer or have tangible vintage items, antique items or other items of interest you would like to donate, please contact Arnie Hebert at (603) 863-5379.

Please be advised that this month’s Senior Social for Aug. 20 has been canceled. We are excited to announce that next month’s Senior Social is scheduled for Sept. 17, when we board the MV Mount Sunapee. The special rate for the Newport Senior Center Senior Socials will be $16. We do need to give advance notice for this social event. A sign-up sheet is on the front desk. Don’t wait until it is too late.

Are you a veteran? Are you confused or have questions about your benefits or need assistance with completing enrollment forms for V.A. Health Insurance? The Mobile Vet Van will be here Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with qualified counselors to help answer your questions. This is a free service and all are encouraged to explore the Mobile Vet Van.

Did you know that if you are at least 60 years of age and are in need of transportation in the Newport area that we are able to help you? SCNS provides transportation in and around the town of Newport. Our hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Our transportation services are easy and hassle free. No need to worry about preselected stops or being at a specific destination on time. Simply call (603) 863-3177, ask for a pick-up at your desired time and our friendly driver will pick you up right at your own home and bring you to your desired Newport destination. When you are finished, simply call (603) 863-3177 and the driver will return to pick you up and bring you home safely. Yes, the drivers will assist you with bags, but nothing over 50 pounds. Due to the number of riders, trips are limited to three trips per day, but the numbers of days are unlimited. The suggested donation is $1 per trip.

The Newport Senior Center Trip Program is pleased to announce its newest adventure. Seats are now available for the North Conway Scenic Railroad Foliage Trip on Oct. 5. Lunch in the dining car will also be available.

Between your motor coach transportation to North Conway and the train ride through the mountains, you can be assured the views and colors will constantly be changing. Seats are limited to 40 passengers and will go fast. The cost of this trip is $88 per person for members and $93 per person for non-members.

If you would like to experience an authentic railroad ride, call (603) 863-4458 to reserve your tickets today.
