NEWPORT — A Claremont man was killed on Thursday, Jan. 9 after being struck by a dump truck at the intersection of Bald Mountain Road and Sunapee Street at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Newport Police reported that Robert Ray, 55, was struck by a dump truck owned by Yukon Trucking LLC of Newport being operated by Carl Mears, 76, of Ascutney. Ray was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck was making a left turn from Bald Mountain Road onto Sunapee Street in Newport before the pedestrian was struck, a police report stated.

Newport Police, EMS and Newport Fire Rescue responded to the scene following several 911 calls to the Newport Police Department Emergency Communications Center.

Assisting in the investigation of the incident were the New Hampshire State Police Motor Carrier Unit, the New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s Office and the Sullivan County Attorney’s Office.

Other units on the scene to assist with the road closures and detours were the Newport Highway Department and the Sunapee Police Department. At this time the incident remains under investigation by the Newport Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team.
