NEWPORT — The end of the workweek—Friday—is a day North Newport residents are likely to remember for a long time.

The detours that have been in place for months will be a thing of the past when the new bridge over the Sugar River officially opens to traffic.

Closed since April, the new bridge will reopen to traffic late Friday afternoon, expected to be between 4 and 5 p.m.

Once the old bridge was closed to traffic, it was torn down and a new bridge erected.

The entire replacement cost including engineering, design, permitting and construction cost $2,660,000.
