Newport 104th Winter Carnival

NEWPORT — Six Newport High School girls and one from Kearsarge Regional High School will compete for the title of Queen of the 104th Annual Newport Winter Carnival Friday night in the Newport Opera House.

They include Newport students Hailey Bent, Peggy Greenhalgh, Allison Howald, Jenna Maheu, Alexandra Richardson and Kelsey Wheeler along with Madison Hemingway of Kearsarge Regional High School.

The winner will be crowned at Friday’s Winter Carnival Pageant in the Newport Opera House starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at $18 at

Natasha Whipple, the 2018 Carnival Queen, will crown the new queen.

The carnival officially kicked off Wednesday evening with the torch lighting ceremony on the Little Common with the queen contestants in attendance.

Skating on the Common is scheduled from 10 p.m. to midnight on Friday with parent supervision required. Leading up to the carnival there was concern if there would be any ice for skating events as it melted down twice to the grass surface.

“We wanted to get it ready for the carnival,” said Newport Recreation Director PJ Lovely.

The busiest Carnival Day is Saturday with the Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast at the Stone Church on the common kicking off the long list of events from 7-10 a.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for youngsters.

Another Saturday highlight will be the Carnival Parade set to head out at 11 a.m. It will start at Newport High School and pass through Downtown, ending up on Elm Street. The popular Axe Man Challenge is set to start at noon.

The Newport Senior Center will be hosting a breakfast from 8-10 a.m. The cost will be $8 for adults and $5 for youngsters.

Free horse drawn wagon rides are scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Winter Carnival theme is Love is in the Air. Carnival buttons are available from the Newport Recreation Center, the Queen contestants and area businesses.

Carnival Princes include Alex Couitt, Blake Minckler, Carter Beauchaine and Tyler Millyaro. Princesses are Isabella Mull, Kensley Ayotte, Kileyannah Butler, Lucia Merrigan, Taylor Russell and Willow Putnam.
