NEWPORT — More than 150 people attended a groundbreaking celebration at Summercrest on Thursday, Aug. 8.

The Assisted Living and Memory Care Community, located at 169 Summer St. in Newport, is currently home for up to 54 residents.

The expansion will add 28 new apartments opening in the summer of 2020.

It will offer new units with innovative designs in their studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.

There will also be major renovations to the existing common areas, providing residents with an all-day dining option in a new café/marketplace, a new expanded activity room, a new hair salon, and a new outdoor patio with access from the café.

The owners of the property include Summercrest Assisted Living Inc., Grand Senior Living, Hospital Hill Realty, Stephen E. Gunnerson and Valley Regional Hospital.

Financing for the construction was provided by Housing and Urban Development (HUD); the project architect is Mackenzie Architects, Burlington, Vt.; construction manager, Steward Construction, Essex Vt.; Developer and Manager, Grand Senior Living, Charlotte, Vt.; interior design, Mackenzie Architects and Civil Engineer, Engineering Ventures, Lebanon.

Construction began in July with preparations for foundation and underground utility work already underway. A new renovated main entrance will lead to the new wing of apartments, which will extend into the existing front parking area where part of the former Newport Hospital once stood.

Raffle prize winners at the groundbreaking were Terri Spanos, Vice President and Branch Manager at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, and Monique Malanga, CFO of Lake Sunapee Region VNA.
