NEWPORT — In 1995 USA TODAY named junior Brian Holmes of Newport its Player of the Year for New Hampshire on its All-USA Football Team.

The little Road Runner scored a record 23 touchdowns for Newport’s Division IV championship team while rushing for 1,017 yards, an average of 5.8 yards per carry.

Holmes, a High Honor Roll student at Newport Middle High School, was also named to the first team Division IV All-State grid team.

Homes, 5-10, 155, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Holmes.

His brother, Richard, also an All-State selection while at Newport, started in the backfield in the fall of 1995 at Ohio Wesleyan where was a sophomore.

Holmes was also an outstanding basketball player at Newport. After six games in the 1995-96 hoop season, Holmes was averaging 18,8 points a game, good for a second-place tie among players from Newport, Sunapee, Fall Mountain and Stevens. He was also second among three-point leaders at that stage of the season with 11.
