For the first time in Newport history, Tiger wrestlers have crowned 3 state champions in a year!

The Newport Tigers headed to Pelham High School for the division 3 state tournament on Saturday and finished in 6th place out of 16 teams while only filling 8 weight classes of the 14 and finished with a historic day.

Out of the 8 Tiger wrestlers, 4 took home some hardware. Senior Mike Wilkinson capped off a strong senior season with a 4th place medal after going 3-2 on the day at 145 pounds. At 106 pounds, freshman Anson Ritondo took home the gold with 3 pins and a 3-0 record on the day. Junior Josh Sharron went 4-0 with 4 pins at 138 pounds en route to his 3rd DIII state title. At 160 pounds, junior Marius Edwards brought home another Tiger championship in an exciting finals match. Edwards was down 5-1 with 10 seconds left to go before he threw a stunning 5 point move to end on top 6-5. Next Saturday Ritondo, Sharon and Edwards will compete in the Meet of Champions tournament at Nashua South.
