SPRINGFIELD, VT-At 12:08 p.m. Friday, March 17, the Springfield Police Department received a report of a single gunshot. It allegedly originated from a residence on Patnodes Way.
Patnodes Way consists of five residences, just off of South Street Hill.
At approximately 1:12 p.m., as a result of the report, surrounding schools and municipal and government buildings were placed in a temporary lockdown while an investigation was conducted.
These lockdowns were lifted when it was determined that there was no direct threat to public safety.
Responding officers isolated the residence and set a perimeter as a precaution to contain any potential violence.
Mutual responding units from Chester Police, Vermont State Police, Vermont Fish and Game, and Vermont DMV responded to assist.
The two subjects believed to be involved in the weapon discharge were detained and interviewed near the scene while the police furthered their investigation.
A third party was reported to have been in or around the residence, but it was determined that the individual was not involved.
The residence was entered by police with voluntary consent, and no evidence of injuries was discovered.
Lieutenant Daniel Deslauries, spokesperson for the department, could not confirm what type of weapon or ammunition was used.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated.
The two subjects detained were released pending the investigation.
The local department thanks Chief Thomas Williams and the Chester Police Department, along with the Vermont State Police and the local game wardens for the backup. Their assistance contributed to this incident being handled safely and efficiently.
