CHARLESTOWN — New Hampshire communities bordering the Connecticut River are mourning the loss of a young Claremont mother who was killed in a motor vehicle accident along Route 12 in Charlestown Monday afternoon, according to a town police report.

Rebecca Higgins, 22, was driving a 2000 Volvo along Route 12, otherwise known as Bellows Falls Road, south of the Route 12A junction, otherwise known as Langdon Road, when the head-on collision with a 2015 International tractor-trailer occurred. Two toddlers, properly restrained in child restraint seats, were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to a press release issued by the Charlestown Police Department.

Higgins, mother of one of the toddlers and aunt of the other, was pronounced dead by authorities, according to Investigative Officer Sergeant Graham.

Emergency responders from the Charlestown Police Department and New Hampshire State Police were notified of the two-vehicle crash and responded to the area at approximately 12:46 p.m.

Personnel from the Charlestown Fire Department, Golden Cross Ambulance, North Walpole Fire Department, Walpole Fire Department, Walpole Police Department, Bellows Falls, Vermont, Fire Department, and Rockingham, Vermont, Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

While the cause of the accident remains under investigation, Investigative Officer Sergeant Graham said in a phone conversation with the Eagle Times Tuesday evening that “there is no anticipation of any criminal charges.”
