CLAREMONT — Matt Becker pitched a complete game as the Cardinals made Senior Night a good one under the lights with a 9-5 win .Barnes Park was electric with the biggest crowd of the year on hand to recognize seniors Ty Theriault, Dominic Puksta, Colby Shepard, Luke Smith, Jesse Foote and Becker on a perfect night for baseball.
“It’s so special. This is our last home game and to have this many people here really meant so much,” said Theriault, who had another big day at the plate, going 3 for 4 including a triple and a couple of rbi’s.
Stevens’ early a 3-0 lead ballooned to 9-0 before the Royals made some late noise. “This team has really come into it, the bats are just alive and our pitching has been tremendous” said Stevens coach Bill Bundy as the Cardinals climb to 9-5 with the win.
The highlight play of the evening was made by Puksta, who sprinted a long way from his left field position to make a diving catch in foul ground to snuff out an early Royal threat. “Man that was a great catch” said Colby Shepard.
Back to back triples by Becker and Theriault in the 6th inning nearly ended the game early but forced Becker to head out for one final inning. “We have been playing smart intense baseball and smashing the heck out of the ball” said Becker, who will be heading off to the University of New Hampshire along with Puksta this fall.
